Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued reviewing math, focusing on rules and operations for equilateral and isosceles triangles. Then, we worked on vocabulary questions. In vocab, he did a great job of applying the relevant strategies and making educated guesses about the meanings of unknown words."
"The student had very high initial scores in all areas, particularly reading and math. He had gotten an 800 in math on a subject test, so he was disappointed when his SAT math score was not perfect. He said that his main issue was making silly mistakes or reading questions wrong, but he also said that he tends to finish the reading and math sections early. Based on all this information, I determined that he mainly needs to work on pacing in these sections. I will assign him outside work for this, and we will bolster it with some academic review and discussion about macro strategies during sessions. The writing section offered some academic material for us to work on. The student showed me his SAT essay. It had great organization, sentence structure, and fluency. We worked on forming a thesis that acknowledges the complexity of an issue, but also taking a firm stance. We conceptually reworked his previous essay, and I assigned him a new essay for homework. We also covered the multiple-choice writing portion. In this section, the student said he cannot always tell what "sounds right", since he spent several years living in India with a different style of English. We went through the questions and assigned specific grammar rules to those questions that felt unclear to him."
"During today's session, the student and I began our walk-through of the SAT. We touched on the answer sheet, essay, and mathematics section of the exam. She successfully completed a full 25-minute math section and performed significantly better than her prior test scores would have suggested. I will discuss general test-taking strategies and techniques for managing anxiety and maintaining focus in future sessions. In addition, next time, we will finish our walk-through by covering the reading and writing sections of the test. I have assigned her a brief reading assignment for homework to help build her mastery of SAT writing questions."
