Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this afternoon's session, the student and I looked through three sections on her online math class. She doesn't struggle much with adding and subtracting the radical expressions. We reviewed simplifying them."
"I had my first session with the students and it went great. We spent some time talking about the areas that they are having difficulty in and also got to know each other. I then focused specifically with each of the students on their area of need. Student #1: We covered an assignment he had previously been given from his Algebra 1 class. We worked through the problems and then discussed where he went wrong and went through how to catch errors in the future. His class focuses on solving word problems so we discussed including some hands-on problems and word problems for our session warm ups. I did not leave him with extra practice, but he is receiving his homework packet for class and will work through it on his own. The focus of our next session will be to review and expand on his packet. Student #2 is an extremely smart young woman and requires little help. She is excelling in her classes. My focus with her is to just expand her base of knowledge and increase he understanding of why this subject is important. She is currently reading Oedipus Rex, and we discussed the book and worked through a literary critique she was assigned. We also looked over an assignment on evolution, where we were able to discuss the key facts of importance and the societal impacts."
"Another productive session. We reviewed the student's homework and spent some time on Geometry. I started down the time management path by getting access to the student's to-do list. We'll start each future session by scheduling his homework for the next few days."
"The student and I used this session to prepare for his SSAT exam. I had him work through a practice test on his own as I observed the length of time it was taking him to cover each type of problem. I noticed that word problems were giving him the biggest challenge, time-wise. After he completed the practice test to the best of his abilities, we reviewed the problems he answered incorrectly, had questions on, or was unable to answer."
"The student worked on order of operations, notation interpretation, and recognition of linear vs. nonlinear functions. Most of her struggles with homework and test questions were due to a lack of understanding of the notation. After this was cleared up, she did much better. Her integer operation skills appear to be strong. We set up another session for next Wednesday."
"Today, we reviewed the formulas of lines as well as covered two of the student's past quizzes (both pertaining to exponents and exponential equations). We also made flashcards of the material, which I have assigned for her to study before the next session. She has been doing better in the course, staying on top of the homework, and practicing the basics. Keep it up!"
