The student is taking the test in a few weeks and fortunately is not too nervous. As this can be a blessing and a curse, we reviewed some of the 'administrative' details of exam day-- eat breakfast, allow enough time to get there, arrive early, bring pencils, bring food, etc. As far as the test goes he feels confident with everything except the essay (although his work in that area has improved dramatically). We reviewed and discussed some sample essays from actual tests and compared them with his writing, which was very useful to identify relative strengths/weaknesses. We then set to work writing and outlining a few more essays, with particular attention to making the planning stage both brief and efficient. He wrote one of the best essays he's done so far, and his writing is steadily improving in quality and consistency.

Shoreline, WA SAT tutoring
Today, we began by looking over the student's SAT diagnostic tests and examining the breakdown of the sections to see which areas of the test give the student the most trouble. We also discussed a bit about her experiences with the SAT. For our first session, we decided to focus more on the SAT math and writing. With the math, the student seems to have the most difficulty with the algebra and geometry. We started to work through a few of the problems she had missed on the diagnostic, as well as other practice problems. The student seems to understand the math concepts involved in the questions; however, she's having trouble seeing how best to apply them to the SAT questions. This is a problem I have seen frequently with students, as the SAT uses very simple math in a tricky way that goes against what students would normally do in their high school classes. With that in mind, we focused a lot of our practice on identifying the trick to the problem and how to work around it. With the writing, we worked through a number of improving sentences and identifying sentence error questions. The student had very little trouble with these and seems extremely well-versed in English grammar, which will be an asset to her on the test. Her main difficulty on this session lies with the questions in which there is no error. She is very reluctant to choose that option, even when it's correct. This is a problem I have dealt with myself, and we focused on articulating a reason for why a sentence is incorrect before eliminating the "No Error" option. Between our sessions, I have suggested that the student work through 3-5 problems per day from the math and writing sections of the diagnostic tests she took, both questions she got and questions she missed. This will help her by allowing her to go back and learn from the mistakes she made the first time through. If she has any questions that she cannot figure out on her own, I have suggested that she write them down so that we can go through them in our next session.
