Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Upon arrival, the student's father gave me another sample summary along with a list and short discussions of characters and themes. I decided to read the summary and the character descriptions with the student. To start, we read the character descriptions, and I asked follow up questions. He was not able to answer most of the questions. Then I drew up the setting as a cloze exercise. He did very well in filling in the blanks based on information that we had discussed yesterday. Then I organized the characters to fill in, this time by category (mostly by family). He was fairly fast at this too, but struggled to write in minor characters. After this, I read the sample summary to him since he was unwilling to read at this point. He still had a lot of trouble either understanding my follow up questions or the sequence and significance of the plot events themselves. Lastly, as a way to move toward theme, I asked to him to consider why the character Billy would make a good friend and why the Pritchard boys would not. I briefed his father on the session, especially the questions he needs to be thinking about. Our next session will be on Sunday.

Today's session was when we focused on reading comprehension, vocabulary and writing mechanics. We reviewed one of the worksheets I had assigned for homework, which included a lengthy reading passage with corresponding questions regarding the characters and important themes. It helped to have her analyze and reflect upon the passage. It was a new way to practice her skills in preparation for her upcoming private school entrance exams. The progress I've been able to observe is how well she has been performing on the homework assignments and practice exam questions that we review together during our sessions. Today we read and evaluated four passages with questions that focused on important vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing mechanics. I assigned her a new handout on reading comprehension and asked her to complete a vocabulary worksheet.

The student had English homework to focus on in this session. The homework asked him to find where certain words were located in his book on Greek mythology, and to determine what the words meant using context clues. He knew a few of the words listed already, and the others he figured out by using context clues surrounding the words. This shows good improvement in his reading comprehension. I helped him with finding synonyms for the words without using the definition he had already given. We are working to expand his vocabulary. He did eagerly look up a few synonyms in his thesaurus, which shows he's developing strong learning skills.

Student 1 and I read from Lunch Money, discussing investments and interest to make connections in the story. Student 2 and I continued to work with first grade sight words and playing reading games with those words. We read "It's Time" and set aside several books in the family library that he can read while I'm away.

The student and I used her homework sheets as a springboard for her reading practice and worked on the rules for making words plural. Then we went on to sight word bingo and created word wagons for rhyming words with the "ame" base. We ended the session by reading sentences containing errors in the "ame" base words and deciding how to correct the mistakes. She is becoming much more willing to try to sound out a word. We have established a really good report and she is definitely making progress!

The student started our session by reading all of her sight words. We reviewed the consonant blends we studied so far, and then I introduced a new one: gr. She practiced the sound and read words that contained that blend. She read words that switched back and forth from short vowel sounds to long vowel sounds. We are still working on this. In handwriting, she practiced writing N and n. She reread a level C book from Sunday, and then wrote about the story. We will meet again on Saturday.
