Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Shoreline, WA Pre-Calculus tutoring
The student and I are reviewing for her final that is this coming Thursday. We have two more sessions set up until then. Essentially, I am creating problems similar to the ones on her test and then seeing how she does with them. I am working hard to help her see that grasping a problem once you look at the solution and grasping a problem when you first see it, are two different things. She understands the problems once they are shown to her or when she looks at the test retrospectively, but does not always fully grasp them when they are first put in front of her. Doing the problems like this, after she finishes one I give to her, I ask her to assess what percentage of the score for that problem she thinks she would have gotten. She is getting between 50% - 75%. I am hoping that this is helping her see part of why her grades can be higher. I told her that until she can look at a fresh problem and do it from the ground up consistently getting 80% of it, she is not at her goal of a B. She should wait until she can do a fresh problem from scratch and see what percent of it she is actually doing perfectly. I hope this helps. I will continue to address this issue in future sessions. We will go through a lot problems before her exam. She says she will also work outside of our sessions.

Shoreline, WA Pre-Calculus tutoring
This session, the student completed a homework assignment that involved the application and analysis of quadratic functions. Generally, the homework tested three main skills: the evaluation of quadratic functions, the solving of a quadratic equation, and the determination of a quadratic functions vertex (absolute max/min determination). Beginning with the general form of the quadratic function graph, we noticed each graph is parabola. This parabola has an absolute minimum if "facing up" and an absolute maximum if "facing down" which makes quadratic functions a prime candidate for questions requesting a maximum or minimum value. He and I practiced finding the vertex of the function by first finding the x coordinate of the vertex. We would then plug this number into the function to find the y coordinate. After he became fairly comfortable with the skill, we focused on interpreting the results. Specifically, I tested his interpretation of the x and y coordinates of the vertex (in the real-world context).
