Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Shoreline, WA Elementary Math tutoring
The student and I looked over her report card and a recent test, and went through the test problems. We are working on correctly identifying the "clue words" in a word problem, along with confidence with the material and her own abilities. We are going to focus on confidence-building moving forward, and I hope to identify more specific sources for her stress and anxiety about the subject so we can try to mitigate it as much as possible. I have been in touch with her teacher, and he suggested adding more time to our sessions to try to get the student's grades up.

We reviewed the student's math homework. He does really well with two digit by one digit multiplication. He is extremely confident when solving problems, which adds to his success because he will not second guess himself as much. I left him with a game to practice his multiplication and reminded him to practice his multiplication flashcards daily for fluency.

The student is currently studying subtraction and our session consisted of him working a homework packet in its entirety. He performed numerous subtractions problems, including a few word problems. He started out making some minor mistakes, but proved to be more than capable by the end of our session. He definitely understood how to extract the appropriate information to subtract and solve each problem accurately. He will be learning how to draw model blocks in the very near future. With that in mind, I took some time to explain the basics of this form of visual math and used his word problems as a platform to illustrate the procedures. After he finished his homework packet, we created some flashcards for his new vocabulary list.

The student started with her math homework which was one-digit into three-digit numbers with no remainders. She was very successful but still needs to work on her multiplication facts. We continued with changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa. She understands the process but is slowed by her lack of fluency with the multiplication table. The last activity we did was working with fact families. She is familiar with this in terms of addition and subtraction but it will become very valuable to her as she continues with multiplication and division.

The student knows the process of adding and subtracting multiple digit numbers. I am going to get away from second grade word problems and just start concentrating on 1st grade concepts since that will be his next grade. He can continue working on the math workbook concerning 2nd grade material for a challenge, but he needs to focus on concepts for next year.

We focused on decoding word problems. The student did great with single-step problems. When we moved on to word problems, she struggled more at first. At first, she had some trouble understanding what the numbers represented in the problems. As we worked through problems, she began to show a greater understanding for the purpose of each operation and number. We also worked on speed drills to improve her fluency. She is still reading around the same words per minute as last week. However, her vocabulary and number of sight words she knows has improved!
