Today the student reviewed her current sight word list and practiced spelling new sight words. We practiced reading words that start with bl ( blue, black, blanket, block). Tomorrow we will look at words starting with fl (flower). She also worked a reading comprehension worksheet that goes with the story we read last week. This week we will work on differentiating between short and long vowels. I want to cover just a few at a time so that she can really understand the sound differences in vowels.

For reading, the student wrote 10 sentences in summary of two stories that he had read for homework. For writing, we did two rounds of fictional story writing (1 paragraph each), using the two readings as models. For speaking, he read his stories, and we edited them together. I introduced concepts of "least" and "most," and the saying "make up your mind" = to decide or choose. I also taught him when to nod vs. shake your head.

Tonight's session consisted in organizing the bibliography information for the student so that she could write it out correctly. We worked on making sure that all of the websites listed were correct. She is now done with all of her projects.

The student and I finished up Little House on the Prairie and did some writing about his favorite character. He read 73 wpm on his first cold read and 119 words with no errors on his first hot read. The second time I timed him, he read 99 words the first time and 139 words the second time. He's making great progress!
