Today we covered definite integrals and using u-substitution to solve both definite and indefinite integrals. We also started working on finding the area between two curves (how to identify the bounds and set up the integral). Some areas that we identified as things to watch for are: radicals (which are best tackled, we found, when converted to fractional exponents), variables in the denominator (best tackled if converted to negative exponents when the variables were moved into the numerator), and for u-substitution when problems have the expression we replace with "u" separating the rest of the function from the differential (dx) (overcome once we apply the commutative property of multiplication and rearrange the problem before substituting in). She is meticulous in showing her work and arranging her questions ahead of time and would do quite well as a STEM major if she were inclined to pursue such a path at a later point in time (though the world of business would lose an incredibly bright young lady from its ranks if that ever happened). Fantastic work as always.

We covered how to simplify trigonometric expressions, specifically the Pythagorean identity (which she hadn't seen before). The student seemed to struggle most with keeping track of dividing and subtracting expressions, which we will discuss more in tomorrow's session.

The student and I went over function transformations, logarithmic function, and exponential functions. I explained the precise definition of a logarithmic function, and why we are so interested in it. I tied in an earlier concept from the chapter, function inverses, to leverage us into a discussion on the exponential function. I wrote several extremely complex problems for exponential functions and logarithmic functions. We closed with an in depth analysis of transformations using the natural log function as our template for translation. This served not only to broaden the student's analytical "tool box," but also as an extended engagement with the log function which assisted to solidify the useful properties of it.
