The student and I reviewed her Organic Chemistry test, and she did very well. She scored a 92% and missed only two problems: one on rearrangements and one on oxidation. We began covering spectroscopy topics, making our way through the material on IR spectroscopy and beginning NMR. Next week we will continue reviewing NMR.

One of the main things we talked about today was memory storage and retrieval strategies. I recommended four things: keeping his studying environment (and body chemistry) at home as similar to his environment at school, writing out his notes by hand multiple times, coming up with interesting metaphors or examples for the concepts in his class, and reviewing his notes or study materials for 15 minutes before bedtime. We discussed the science behind each of these strategies so he knows that they can be very useful. We also talked about his test taking strategies. I also laid out what I think our future sessions will look like. A significant portion of our time will be practicing exercises like the worksheets he receives in class so he is prepared to do well on them when they are passed out. Another portion may be set aside to cover concepts he does not understand or wants more information on. It was a solid session.

We focused on problems associated with acid-base equilibrium. This included concentration calculations, titration, and calculation of equilibrium constants for acids and bases. We started with a practice problem set for an upcoming quiz on Monday and continued with AP practice questions from previous years. The student came away with a good understanding of the math behind these concepts.

Today, we covered material related to special senses. Some of the topics discussed included olfactory signal transduction, gustatory transduction, auditory and vestibular function and components, visual pathways, etc. The student is doing well, and she is in the beginning of her studying and has retained a fair bit of information so far. She has an upcoming exam on special senses and the endocrine system. I have created a study guide for her use in preparation for the exam. We will be meeting again soon, and in the next session, we will finish special senses and cover endocrine system. The student's attitude was great. She is always so interested in the material and really takes time to answer my quiz questions. I always include high yield material, memory tools, and strategies during our sessions. I emailed the incomplete study guide and will be finishing it before our next session (tomorrow). I will also be making a mock exam for her to take before her exam.

Tonight the student and I discussed another quiz that I created covering deep face, superficial face, osteology, and head and neck neurovascular structures. We plan to meet tomorrow evening for as long as he feels comfortable in anticipation for his head and neck examination on Friday morning. I look forward to working with him again tomorrow!

We reviewed cell structure and anatomical vocabulary. We then went over bone structure, long bone anatomy, and skull bone anatomy. I gave the student several review quizzes in the beginning, which she performed very well on (between 95% and 100%).
