Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We largely focused on the conceptual understanding of what a derivative is. Additionally, we applied the derivative to demand function to generate a marginal revenue function. These type of problems were a bit wordier, and the student struggled a little bit more with these. We will continue working on them."
"We reviewed subtraction, especially borrowing, and covered multiplication properties and the concept of multiplication. We also discussed nouns, pronouns, and adjectives, and how to identify them; reading comprehension practice; and vocabulary words. The student had a somewhat hard time identifying adjectives. I asked her to learn counting by 1-12 and to do some of the leftover problems in previous units. I also asked her to go through some of the sentences in an easy book and practice picking out the nouns, pronouns, and adjectives. Finally, I asked her to find the definitions and learn the vocabulary words I gave her."
"Both students are practicing for the state assessment exam. We performed practice questions on workbook material. I suggest Student A continues trying out the problems on the workbook material. Student B did half of the problems incorrectly. I suggest reviewing those problems during his next session before he moves on to additional material."
"Today we went over solving for variables in two step algebraic expressions, simplifying expressions when there are terms in parentheses and solving for two step inequalities. The student is struggling with remembering the rules for adding and multiplying negative numbers so I am trying to get him to think about it in terms of money where negatives are where you owe someone....he seems to understand this approach."
"We spent this session going over content for the student's quiz on Monday. We used most of our time doing more practice problems on graphing using the methods from last session, and we also went over definitions of functions. We spent the last 10 minutes of this session reviewing his physics homework."
"The student and I went over an upcoming project for her math class, which combines a lot of the concepts she has been learning (adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing fractions). We spent most of our time on fraction division, which she seems to have a solid grasp of. She still has some trouble visualizing and making pictures out of fractions, but seems to know how to do the figuring fine. The curriculum seems to be big on having students understand how to visualize fractions, so she will get a lot of practice. She is also hesitant about simplifying fractions, but with some prompting, she can do it on her own. I feel that she has made improvements and seems more eager and confident with her homework, which I am happy to see. I look forward to seeing her again next week!"
