"Today's session we mostly worked on basic circuit analysis. We did work with batteries, resistors, and other components. We looked at Ohm's law and used it to solve for volts, amps, and resistance and then power."
"Covered concept of buoyancy, specifically involving a question with finding percent of ice berg submerged in water with only density of water and ice given. Also covered electric fields and forces and taught the concept of keeping answer in vector notation (x hat, y hat etc.). Reviewed a few examples he had from homework and class. Also provided him with my own examples. Went ahead and also discussed some concepts with electric circuits -- specifically Kirchhoff's Voltage Law, Kirchhoff's Current Law, Resistors in series and parallel, and reviewed some simple examples highlighting each use. The student understood mostly all of what I was saying, and did not seem to struggle with concepts. Naturally more session will be needed to gauge progress. He showed that he understood material and new concepts, and involved him with answering a few simple circuit questions, which he answered correctly. Some studying skills I taught in the session: the concept of keeping vectors in vector notation, and always writing out the formulas separately and clearly, as well as keeping the same conventions and notations. Also I showed the student to leave work in symbolic form until the end of the problem, because otherwise, rounding (substituting for decimal numbers) will result in a greater error if done from the beginning. I also expressed how important it is to write initial conditions, or givens, at the top of the page to always refer back to."
"I met with the student and was happy to hear that she had increased her grade on her most recent test. This session we went over two worksheets she had been given by her teacher. The first one focused on the force of friction and balancing forces to calculate acceleration. The second one focused on everything she had learned up to this point. She was able to complete the worksheets easily with my help. It is clear that she is better understanding the material and understanding physics in general."
"We worked through problems related to periodic trends, atomic radius, 1st ionization energy, electron affinity, and electron configuration. The student has a strong conceptual understanding of most of this material, but still has some trouble with electron configuration. I will look for additional reading to help with that."
"We covered phase changes, vapor pressure, intermolecular forces, ideal gas behavior. The student has several assignments and practice tests that we will be working on for the next 5 sessions. He shared those documents with me and we've made it a priority to go through the practice test problems first. He was really engaged in the topics. Some sessions will probably run longer than usual in the future due to the amount of work we need to cover together."
"We extracted and stored lithium before it oxidized. I also brought some chemicals to demonstrate an extreme endothermic reaction. I also taught him safety about the lithium, chemicals used in the other reaction, and to never work with them unsupervised. The student enjoyed the experiments."
