Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over a book report that the student had written, using rhetorical vocabulary and transition words. We practiced vocabulary and synonyms to use on the test and in writing. She has 10 terms to relate to her personal reading for next week."
"During today's session, I had the student work on a Released assessment exam Reading test. We focused on helping him develop strategies that work best for him when reading passages and answering the questions. I pointed out the importance of him taking the time to go back to the passage and locate the answer instead of relying on his memory. We also talked about the importance of using context clues as a way of finding the meaning of difficult vocabulary."
"Started by playing an "inference game" with the student. Given his high interest in trains, I brought a book related to trains for him to read out loud. After reading each page, I asked a few comprehension-focused questions. He was able to demonstrate good comprehension by writing a great summary on the whiteboard after finishing the book. I explained to him that we will start doing a similar summary of another book tomorrow. We will also play another round of the inference game. I briefed the student's father about the session before leaving."
"Today was my last session with the student, and I've really enjoyed working with her. She continues to excel with spelling, and she did a great job today with writing. She had no problem completing her homework today. I hope she continues to put forth effort and do her best at school. She has extra workbooks to work on too, if she needs the extra challenge!"
"Today, the student and I worked on a lot of vocabulary. We went over some of the ESL workbook I got for her as well. We went through the kitchen and labeled items with post-it notes so that she can learn the words in English for those items. This session was good. She still has a lot to learn, and it is a hard process."
"The student and I worked on finishing last week's work first today. We identified the nouns in the given sentences and classified them as people, places or things. He did a great job with this. Mom really wants us to continue to work on parts of speech, so we will continue to move through those together. Next, we read through a higher level book on football. I chose this book because I know he is very interested in this and wanted to see how motivated he would be when reading about a topic I know he loves."
