Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on the modeling method for multiplying decimals numbers. We applied it to a decimal times a whole number, and then a decimal times a decimal. We then worked on the word problems from his online system for school."
"The student and I worked on using addition properties. After a few refresher problems, she seemed to understand the concepts well. She is able to use the properties and name which property was used. These concepts are particularly helpful as she is still working on fluidity and confidence with single digit addition. I am also working with her on breaking numbers apart to make them easier to add together (e.g. 8+3= 5+3+3). She is just beginning to use this strategy and will gain more fluidity with additional practice. Her mental math skills are improving as well."
"The student completed a performance task that asked her to identify perimeter and area of a garden using mixed numbers and fractions. She did very well on this task, and was able to use real-life application. She then reviewed decimals. She had a little more difficulty with this task, and will be reviewing decimals next session."
"The student completed his forty-sixth tutoring session aimed at improving his overall academic performance. Since he had indicated that he did not have any homework, I decided that our time would be best spent focusing on the academic area he is struggling with the most (i.e., algebra). As a result, I provided the student with a number of math problems relevant to the material he is currently covering in class. The problems required him to solve multi-step equations, which gradually increased in difficulty as the session progressed. He was initially asked to solve each problem independently. If he solved an item incorrectly, he was asked to work out the problem on the whiteboard so that I could point out his errors and guide him toward the correct solution. Overall, he performed well, which suggests that he has an adequate grasp of the material."
"The student continued to work through her class work, reviewing ideas and learning new ones. Before Thursday, she is going to complete the diagnostics test. We will then work through that for part of the time on Thursday."
"The student did great! In math, we worked on more fact fluency, basic algebra, and long division. He is getting better, but still has a way to go with mental math. Continued to practice his fast facts. In reading, we worked on comprehension via cause and effect, as well as vocabulary study. His reading homework is to practice being a fluent reader."
