Tutoring review by Manuel in Seguin, TX
Today's session with the student was extremely productive. We worked on graphing trigonometric functions, specifically cosine and sine. This is always a hard topic for any student, but her attitude was so positive that I rejoiced with her progress throughout. The strategy for graphing involves finding period first by using the (2a—pi/frequency) equation, then dividing the period into four equal parts, before taking the max zero and min values of the function with respect to the baseline. This process takes time and meticulousness. But as mentioned before, the student's attitude allowed her to slowly progress through the material to the point where she was graphing multiple functions on the same graph. She made a great start with this complex material.

The student had had one quiz since the last time we met and he scored an 82. We went through the quiz and determined that his mistakes were a result of going too quickly and not writing down his work. He is exceptionally quick at flipping numbers around in his head, but he needs to focus on writing down each of his steps. When he does this, he rarely makes errors. We then reviewed his most recent homework assignment, which extends what we've covered about adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing integers into real life applications. For example, they learned the equations for converting between Fahrenheit and Celsius. To be able to use these equations required knowledge of basic algebra, knowing the order of operations (PEMDAS), and then applying rules of integers. When he writes out all of his work, he easily gets these problems right. We will continue working on building good problem solving habits and being organized as the math he is learning becomes more complicated.

Tutoring review by Ryan in Seguin, TX
Today we started to talk about how to strategize for the SAT. We specifically talked about the grammar section. Simplifying a sentence by getting rid of excess modifiers and clauses can often make it easier to see the right answer. Another pointer: the harder grammar questions near the end of a section often focus on tricky preposition rules, and also often are written in awkward passive voice to obfuscate the right answer.

Tutoring review by Edwin in Seguin, TX
Today, we went over the chain rule and implicit differentiation. The student was attentive throughout the session. I told him to read the textbook more and to work more practice problems. I also told him to check the answers in the back of the book after he was done with the problem.
