Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on finding the area of compound shapes or shapes embedded in others. He is getting stronger at using geometric formulas, especially circles. We also worked on solving linear inequalities. Next week, we will continue working with 3-dimensional shapes and linear inequalities. He continues to work hard, and his confidence is increasing with every session."
"The student and I worked on finding the first derivative and second derivative of a base function then using the first and second derivative to gain insights about the base function in order to find critical points, maximums, minimums, concavity, and the graph of the base function. We also worked on word problems involving optimization. In these problems, we found the maximum or minimum of a designated value (such as the maximum volume of a container or the minimum cost of a product)."
"The student and I worked on finding volume of functions using the slicing method and disk method. She struggles with not mixing up both formulas, since they are so similar. She also struggles with cross-sectional problems with different shaped cross-sections than the base. She did really well overall and could do most steps without help. I think some more practice before her test next Wednesday will prepare her well."
"The student and I worked on finding where a function is increasing, decreasing, and its extrema; where a functions is concave up and concave down, and inflection points; and using the first and second derivatives. We looked at how to use a written formula for a function to find these, and how to use the graph of both the function and the derivative of the function to find these."
"The student and I worked on finishing up the geometry section of her class today. We reviewed the section as a whole, while also discussing surface areas and volumes. She seemed a little confused by the differing units for volumes and areas, but she seemed to understand the overall concepts well. We have just one more session before her final, so we will likely review as much as we can for her class."
"The student and I worked on focusing and getting him into the right mindset for his test. We reviewed the materials that I made for him and also worked on how we can use benchmarks to check our work. He understands that he has to focus and check his work to avoid making mistakes."
