Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In preparation for the student's upcoming calculus exam, we worked through several practice problems related to derivatives involving the chain rule, the u substitution method, the power rule, trigonometric functions, logarithms, the product rule, the quotient rule, implicit differentiation, and finding the equation of a tangent line. He had a strong understanding of all of this material by the end. At the end, we reviewed the relevant derivative equations and trigonometric identities that he will need on his exam. He wanted to focus on this material more than the results of his previous exam, but we will review that exam before his final to ensure that he fully understands that material."
"In this session, the student and I went over more topics concerning derivatives. We covered product rule, quotient rule, and power rule in order to simplify the function's derivatives. He felt comfortable with the material, and he continued working on homework problems to practice what he's learned."
"In this session, we covered differentiation, continuity, limits, and asymptotes. These topics had been discussed the previous week in class and would be tested on the Monday quiz. As such, we went over the material in fairly great detail in order to prepare the student for the quiz. He struggled with continuity (especially in relation to radical functions) and asymptotes. We practiced these two concepts the most extensively, and the student was able to perform much better by the end of the session. I expanded on some test taking strategies, specifically in regards to time management. He will try to spend too much time on an individual question that he cannot find the answer to, so I told him to allot a specific amount of time per question that he cannot surpass. I left the student with a practice quiz to take at home under timed conditions (20 minutes like the quiz)."
"In this session, we went over old quiz problems from the student's class. He had trouble with equations of lines. We went over linear equations (slope intercept form, point-slope form) and how to extract information from those equations. We then went over quadratic equations and how to extract information from such. We touched up on the quadratic formula as well. I will be creating a practice problem set for these equations for him and will see how he feels on Wednesday."
"In this tutoring session, we covered the topic of simple harmonic oscillators. We worked through the derivation of key equations with both algebra and calculus for springs and pendulums. We also covered the topic of damped harmonic oscillators. We also covered one problem that focused on springs. This problem was selected because it drilled down to the very heart of working with springs and covered a common misconception."
"In today's session, I introduced the student to rules of derivatives when combining functions, such as the product rule, quotient rule, and chain rule. We also went over some trig derivatives. We then did some sample problems on each topic."
