The student had finished his free response portion of his math mid-term and felt good about it. The next portion of his math midterm is multiple choice. Since he felt confident about his math knowledge, we worked a bit on history. He still struggles to get the main idea of a reading passage so we spend a lot of time discussing what the passage is about. He processes things orally quite well. To help him summarize his main ideas, I asked him to find evidence in the passage that supported his interpretation. Often that leads him to change his summaries. Once he gets the correct main ideas, he just whizzes through all the required tasks.

The student did well today. I made up a mock test, matching countries to certain factual statements, that also required a background knowledge or framework to answer correctly. He felt this helped his understanding and helped him memorize things that he will be tested on. We added a few more facts and frameworks as notes around the border of the test so he can use this as a study sheet next week. If this approach helps him get a better grade, we will incorporate it on the next tests as well. We also checked his math homework. He understood it well, since it still involved graphing linear inequalities. He will start some new techniques next week.
