Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered genetic transformation via plasmid transfer in E. Coli. We also went over an in class lab. We discussed the pGLO plasmid, what is what genes it contains and how the transformed bacteria will appear when plated. We covered what the expected outcome of the lab was and why."
"Today the student and I went over DNA Replication and the central dogma and reviewed what we covered from last week. He is doing well and understands most of the topics that we discuss. The only things he is having trouble with is remembering the specific terms, but once I describe the process he immediately understands. I suggested he memorize the words in order to tie the definitions and terms together. He didn't have much to go over today, but overall there is definitely progress."
"At today's session, the student and I went over topics in cell biology, and genetics. Specifically, we discussed various types of mutations (point, frameshift, nonsense, missense, deletion, insertion) and the types of effects they can have on DNA sequences. We then discussed genetics topics such as alleles, dominance, homozygous and heterozygous alleles, genotypes, phenotypes, and worked on some Punnett square problems together. Finally, we discussed the process of Meiosis, the different steps in it, and the final products of each step. We also went over chromosomes, chromatids, zygotes, karyotyping, transcription, translation, and mitosis. The student seemed very interested and engaged in the material. She demonstrated a completely positive attitude, and was happy to have clarification on the material. She did not appear to struggle with anything in particular. I did send her some PowerPoint files and worksheets on Meiosis and DNA replication."
