Session Summaries by English Tutors

I gave the student handouts on writing, which we discussed, and on the Meridian Hill Park drum sessions. He wrote an essay on his first job, which I read, marked up, and discussed with him. I will send him John McPhee's New Yorker article Draft No. 4 so that he can see a professional writer's strategy and advice for beginning to write on a blank page. The session ended with a brief discussion with his mother on his development and on writing.

I spent the first part of the session reviewing an essay that was emailed to me prior to the session. Based on this discussion, he was given the task as homework to rewrite the essay to make the changes discussed. Then, I gave him some comprehension questions based on the book that he was given to read by his other tutor. The second part of the session, the student showed me some practice assessment essay that he did online. These essays were scored online as well. We discussed the comparison of one of the essays in which he received a 5, as compared to one that he received a three. We went through all of the criteria that was given in the scoring rubric and discussed the essay in relationship to this rubric. After our discussion, he spent the rest of the session rewriting the essay. He was also given a short essay to write based on the novel that he is reading.

We investigated how to look at bibliographies and how to cite articles and journals. After investigating his original topic and using words to narrow the search, he saw how his research paper could become more focused. I challenged him with a variety of search words that would intensify his search, but also give a rounder view of the possibilities. We are to meet again this Thursday to follow up with the assignments.

In this session, I used the "Splunge" skit by Monty Python's "Flying Circus" to illustrate how important it is, when writing an argumentative essay, to take a position and stick to it, even if your position is "I don't know and other people shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions."

We discussed potential theses about a short story (story of an hour) and practiced basic rhetorical analyses. We then discussed a new topic about which both students will write a short 1-2 page paper. Both students are very bright and engaging with great insights, and it's a pleasure to work with them.

The student has a research paper coming up, and he has to come up with a thesis and outline (before writing his rough and final drafts). We went over the general layout of a research paper, and we talked about the components that are required. We then discussed possible topics and landed on one about sharks (after talking about evolution and ecology, and the importance of predators in both). We started looking through some online sources, and the student began taking notes. At our next session, we are going to go over the notes he has taken to finalize his thesis and start working on the outline. He also has a speech that he has to record and turn in. Last session, he made the PowerPoint, but he still has to work on giving the actual speech itself. We have discussed it and decided that next session we will discuss a script for him and then record the speech.
