Tutoring review by Julia in San Marco, FL
Unit 6 is on ratios, proportions, percent, similar shapes, scale factors and solving proportions using algebra. The student scored 93% correct on the practice test and 93% on the graded test. He needs support in going from words to math, but shows excellent comprehension of manipulating fractions as ratios. He is using the strategies of writing the formulas, drawing a sketch of the problem and solving equations by division. He is able to keep track of what he is doing with prompting in the form of questions and referral to his graphically organized notes. He knows when an extra step of adding or subtracting is needed. He is looking forward to the next unit which is on circles.

I taught the student the differences between arithmetic and geometric sequences. I showed him how to write the equations for these, and how to figure out a given term in the sequence. He did many practice problems with this. He did pretty well. Also, I showed him how to get the sum of an infinite decreasing geometric sequence.

Today was our last session, for the student is having her final math exam tomorrow. She is well prepared for her final exam, which covers the surface area of rectangular prisms and cylinders. After some practice, she was able to complete all the questions on her study guide with ease. In addition, after we finished reviewing for her math test tomorrow, we also completed her science homework. We covered earthquakes, sedimentary concepts, and seismic waves. She said she feels a lot better about the science concepts, and she feels very confident for her math exam tomorrow.

We continued working on vocabulary. We reviewed the synonyms assignment from last week which I had her review the words the student looked up to make sure she had a mastery of them. We then went through some analogies which we treated as a test like scenario. She attempted the questions and was able to complete the assignment with time to spare. We ended the session going over additional vocab she had yet to learn.

The student and I used completing the square, the quadratic equation, and graphing to solve second order equations. We also went over equations using Volt's Law, and maximizing areas and surface areas. We did about 40 problems and he seems to be getting the concepts.
