Science Tutoring review by Gabriel in Renton, WA
As the student is now covering the atom and molecules in her class, we looked at the different ways that molecules come together and different bond strengths. From here we took the concept of electron motion and discussed how it works with electricity and looked at comparisons to the human nervous system. At times I will pause and ask her questions to see if she can make the connections between material covered and real world aspects. I left her an assignment that deals with elements, nutrition and vitamins so that she can see how the elements play a role in the human body. She is making great progress and I hope to push her to see more that what is just in the book. Next week we are going to build molecules and see interactions as well as go over a few videos that will detail the different styles of bonding (ionic, covalent, van der walls, hydrogen etc.)

We went over a lot of basic microbiology concepts-transformation/transduction/conjugation as well as operons. We also went over practice questions. The student learns quickly, so reinforcement and application of knowledge seems to work best.

The student and I continued to prepare for her upcoming final exam in AP Bio. She said that her teacher postponed the exam until June, giving us two more sessions to review the material. Specifically, we covered the nervous system including: anatomical and functional differences between the central and peripheral nervous system, parts of the reflex arc, structure and function of a neuron, meaning of an action potential, diagramming an action potential, linking action potential of a neuron to muscle movement (i.e., neuromuscular junction).
