Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Science Tutoring review by Shirley in Akron, OH
Our goals at our session were to finish homework and study for the new material. Homework was about isotopes, how to find them and isotope abundances, as well as finding out the average mass of each element based on the isotopes and their abundances. I would like to say that by the end of the homework, he was a complete pro at it! We then studied information about valence electrons and Bohr Diagrams, as well as groups and periods in the periodic table. I spent the second half of our session explaining and teaching him the information, and I actually brought along my MCAT general chemistry book, which had some information, for him to look at. He learned quickly and understood the concepts right away. Then, we reviewed some homework that was given for today's class.

Science Tutoring review by Kevin in Akron, OH
The student has shown very steady improvement. We went over the metric system and how to convert one unit to another. We also started to cover dimensional analysis. She did show difficulty understanding the methodology but I believe with practice she will understand how to use it.

Science Tutoring review by Crystal in Akron, OH
Today, the student and I covered a vast majority of subjects. We discussed the difference between gradualism and punctuated equilibrium--slow, steady, constant versus rapid influxes and steady states. We briefly went over major scientific experiments that hypothesize the history of life, examples of major mass extinctions in history, the diversity of life, as well as the main theories of how life began. We spent most of our time on adaptive radiation and working on her phylogenic tree and in class assignment. Strategies that we worked on were thinking of these 'biology terms' in ways she sees everyday. We went over how adaptive radiation causes an increase in speciation and often occurs after mass extinctions, and how the initial 'low competition' increases population, allowing species to become rooted in new environments, which increases population. As this population increases, competition for resources begins, and the original species breaks off into several new species that adapt to different environmental conditions. I am sending her a PowerPoint I made for her, and I think today was a great success because I saw confusion turn to understanding, which was fantastic!

Science Tutoring review by Jeff in Akron, OH
We covered concepts from the intermolecular forces unit. Mainly we reviewed the practice exam the student was given by her professor. The student seemed to grasp the material in this unit a lot more than the previous one. Her application of the knowledge is more fluent as well.
