Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I have been focusing almost entirely on getting ready for the assessment test, since the test will be administered next week. We reviewed her practice homework, and then I assigned more assessment test prep for homework for next session. She is still improving upon her focus as well as using evidence to support her responses."
"We read poetry and talked about using senses to find figurative language. I suggested using the 5 senses to describe the text to help comprehension. He will read chapter 2 of The Three Musketeers. The student made self-to-self connections and self-to-world connections - it was wonderful!!"
"We continued where we had left off on Tuesday. We kept reading in one of the books he has, reading sentence chunks or full sentences and working through words together. When we come to a word he can't get (which is probably every third word or so), we sound through the letters together. Based on the cards we made together last time, I encourage him to try both a long and short vowel sound with each syllable to see what fits. Some letters get confused for him--for examples, when asked what sound Y makes, he often responds with a W sound. P and B also get confused occasionally. We made more cards (TH=thing, ING=sing, words ending in Y can sound like I or E, -ce can sound like S). I encouraged him to keep practicing with the cards, and spoke with his mother about quizzing him."
"We read a story together and practiced vocabulary and pronunciation. We did some conversation to practice and emphasize irregular past tense conjugations. The student did well on the homework and is motivated to improve her English."
"We read a study guide and geography. The study guide was for a test and covered eukaryotic cells and their organelles like the Golgi apparatus, chloroplasts, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleolus, lysozymes, centrioles, phospholipids, etc. We also read geography and read about the different civilizations that existed in ancient Mexico and the area where these civilizations were located, and the languages they spoke, as well as the colonial period and independence of Mexico from Spanish rule. In addition, we learned about different economic activities that exist in different climate regions of Mexico."
"We read aloud, and the student did a great job of summarizing the story.. He took notes while he read to help him remember what he read and to teach him to be alert while reading. We finished by working on Math."
