Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over biology transcription, translation, gene replication, cell development regulation, meiosis, mitosis, chemistry periodic table trends, intermolecular bonds. The student had a good attitude and was only struggling slightly in concepts. We will continue to work on this next session."
"For the second session of the week, the student worked on a biology worksheet that he had to hand in for a grade. The worksheet was mainly concerned with the natural selection, its main factors, its definition, and the effect on observations in nature. The questions were quite ambiguous, so we took our time to go through 20 of them one by one while discussing why some of the multiple-choice answers were not chosen. He is very engaged with a great memory of things he discussed, so it was pleasant to see him fight for his chosen answer, whether it was right or wrong. Then, we did some more mathematics problems from the sample exam that that he was given in class. We did around ten more problems. The focus was on getting the answers correct, but also in writing down all the steps legibly so as to help any grader."
"The student and I focused our last section on how she intends to study for the final. She freely admits that her scores correlate to the amount of time she studied for each exam. Her teacher had given out a long, but detailed handout for the final exam. We used that to discuss which chapters she needed to focus on the most. We decided that the best bet would be to go through and define every vocab word and concept first, go back to study them in sections, and then have someone else (e.g. her parents, a friend from class) ask her questions from her study guide to then focus her studying on the parts she knew the least. From the first time we met until now, I am happy to see her starting to take control of her studying, creating outlines of when and what she will study, and understanding her own responsibility in the outcome of her grades."
"Tonight we covered working on a homework assignment on an article about HIV-1 and it's link to smallpox. I had the student read aloud the article so that she could be also hearing back the information as she read it. There were 4 questions at the end that I assisted with as far as where to look in the article to find the particle answers. I allowed her to put the answers into her own words as she took sentences from the article to answer the questions. She is really doing wonderful at using her own terms and definitions for science. We then moved on to a mass review of the Digestive system. I will be sending her additional practice as well as some practice to look ahead for the circulatory system. Great session."
"We reviewed the immune system, nutrition and circulatory system. She has to review nutrition and circulatory systems a bit more. She needs to be more familiar with the glands, hormones involved in digestion and the structure of the heart."
"Organized the student's notes and tests. Determined what subjects we need to backtrack to, to study and make new diagrams. made a study plan for the next few weeks, talked about getting a test practice book for review questions!"
