Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I had the student take a practice reading test. I timed her so that she had the same amount of time as she would on the actual test. She said she felt more confident taking the test. She was still jumping on the first answer that seemed correct so we discussed the importance of reading all the answer choices. We also began to study for the Science test. "
"We covered a lot of different pieces today. We spent some time finishing up homework problems that the student had made mistakes on. We also looked through the teacher's chapter review. We went over the last section of the chapter that his teacher just introduced on Thursday. When I left, we had gone over everything he didn't understand from the review. I left him with a list of to-do's for studying Monday night. If he does what he knows to do studying-wise, I have every expectation that he'll do well on his test."
"We analyzed the student's performance on his last practice test. He continues to struggle in science, but he has made great improvement in English & reading. He is 1-3 questions per section short of a 1-2 point improvement in both sections. He is also quite close to a significant score jump in math. We've agreed that math is our best goal for the final session before he takes the ACT next weekend."
"We completed science test 5 together. We then did some English (which I hoped would improve her confidence). She did pretty well on this. She takes the test this week and will contact me to continue tutoring once she receives her scores."
"Spelling--He had accidentally omitted several words from his list (compliant and absent) so he missed those on the test. It is so crucial that he learns to check over his work. He's so smart, but often gets in a hurry and makes simple mistakes like this. Reading--Almost finished with the novel, and worked on helping him get going with journal entries."
"The student and I summed up what we've been talking about throughout tutoring. We worked through a science section (timed), an English section (partially timed), and reading. He is going to review science and math this week before the ACT."
"Today the student and I prepared for her chapter 2 algebra test that she has tomorrow. To do so, we spent the time going through all the questions (wrong or right) that she had on her previous chapter 2 quizzes. After doing so, she felt much more confident about the concepts and felt ready for her test. I advised her to review old homework problems as an additional form of prep."
"Most of the session we talked about hybridization and orbitals, as well as exactly what the professor was asking for on each particular section. We touched base on the next pressing topic, a quiz on properties of solutions. I developed a better idea of the topics under question, so I will be able to bring some specific examples next time to better reinforce concepts."
"The student and I worked on writing/grammar today. He will be taking the SAT test on Saturday so he will have to gather all his resources for the essay and practice a few more sections. Overall, he has improved a lot since when we first started. I have never seen anyone improve as quickly as he did. As long as he tries during the SAT, he will be able to score an appropriate grade for some of his desired colleges."
"Last night we reviewed some of the mathematics portion of the test, mostly focusing on geometry. She was very attentive and did very well on the practice questions. We then started working on one of the actual practice tests (just the math section) in her prep book and she did VERY well - only missing a handful of questions. She has made some real progress since the first practice test she took, I can see it already."
"The student and I spent most of this lesson working on conjugations of irregular verbs, since this is the grammatical point that is giving her the most trouble and also what she is currently being tested on at school. We practiced conjugating as well as putting these verbs into complex sentences."
"In today's session, we covered several readings the student needed to read in order to answer several questions that are going to be in her chapter test. The readings were about industrialization and Colonial times. It was a productive session and she seems very enthusiastic."
