"The student and I discussed her homework for the end of this week and beginning of next week. We started with a worksheet on naming compounds. It required her to go from the compound itself to the compound name, as well as the other direction. We went through each of them in detail, and focused on concepts such as the difference between ionic naming and covalent naming, as well as why the subscripts were on the compounds. The next worksheet we discussed wasn't due until Monday, but the student thought that it was very similar to another worksheet we had gone over together at our last session. However, we realized that there were some reactions that her teacher had not yet covered. We did discuss some of the problems, and they focused on decomposition reactions, as well as some acid-base reactions. We ended up stopping in the middle, and decided that we would come back to it once her class had covered the material. I made sure that she was comfortable with naming compounds and with single and double replacement reactions, because those are the concepts her class has covered. The student seems to be feeling a little better about the material, but still doesn't feel as confident as she would like. She is going to keep in touch about what her teacher focuses on when she gets back to class, and we will take it from there."
"We covered amines and carbohydrates. We discussed ways to better organize all the reactions to help with multi-step synthesis reactions. The student will be taking her final exam for this course within the next three weeks. I will stay on tutoring her until the final exam."
"The student and I went over Lewis dot structures for the majority of our session. We went over the answers from a pop quiz, which tested more complex knowledge, and went over basic concepts, as well. She had a great attitude and I think she has a strong grasp of the concepts!"
