The student and I concentrated on system of equation problems and complex word problems. She sometimes gets overwhelmed halfway through a problem, so we are practicing breathing exercises to calm her down.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Doron in Georgetown, TX
The student and I worked on the Writing section of the SAT today. We went over all three types of questions that will be asked of him. Of the three, he is strongest with the revisions and identify the errors (he managed to answer only 1/6 questions from the improve the passage). Because a lot of the grammar is new to him, we covered the various classes of pronouns, reviewed clauses, talked about adverbs and various pats of speech, and discussed parallelism. Essentially, because these questions are foreign to him, I want him to be aware of the various errors he'll be tested on. He should perform faster now that he understands how each question works, and he is in possession of a good start of grammar. In the future I recommend working with him over several sessions. He has a good mind for grammar.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Sarah in Georgetown, TX
The student had an excellent first session. She is having more difficulty with the critical reading section, especially the reading comprehension section, so we focused on that, including some work on the sentence completion questions. She seems more confident on the writing multiple choice. I asked her to write a practice essay before we meet next week. We finished by working on some math problems, which the student did well on. We will do more math review next time, as we only got to a little bit of geometry. In this section, she just needs to focus on understanding exactly what the question is asking, and watching out for trick answers that might lead her astray. I also asked her to take a diagnostic test on a website, so that we have some more information to look at together.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Kate in Georgetown, TX
We started the session with some grammar practice. We briefly touched on 'improving paragraph' questions and, because the student had no problem with these, quickly moved on to identifying sentence error questions. I chose a set of idiomatic questions to make sure that she had a good grasp of the irregular rules of English grammar. We also reviewed agreement errors, modifier placement errors and punctuation errors. To finish the session, I had the student tackle a long, somewhat dense reading using a new strategy. I had the student pause after each paragraph to give me a brief summary of what she read and I had her jot down a few notes. She thought that this technique might take too much time but, when she got to the comprehension questions, she answered each one correctly without spending too much time looking back through the text. The student was very excited by this and asked to do more reading practice next session.

We covered reading comp for the new SAT. We went through several passages, concentrating on the specific question types and wrong answer elimination. I gave the student two passages for homework. In the second hour we reviewed geometry concepts for the new SAT and we did practice problems together.
