The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

The SAT is one of the two main college admissions exams that assess a student's readiness for college. College admissions offices review scores from exams like the SAT when they are considering a student for acceptance. Alongside factors like GPA, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays, the SAT is very important. The SAT Reading test measures a student's skills in being able to understand what they read, take away information from what they read, and then apply information from what they read in order to answer questions.

I gave the student new vocabulary flash cards and went over some of them with her. After this, we read passages together and went over how to study the tone and main ideas of the passages. The student then answered SAT questions related to the passages. The next hour we reviewed perfect tenses (which we went over during the last session) and did writing exercises. These writing exercises included revising wordy sentences and answering actual SAT writing questions.

Met for the first session and looked over her previous scores. Gave her several pages of information and ideas to increase her success in studying. Developed a plan for training for the Reading and Writing. We used her study guide to review some of the problems and get an idea of where her problem areas are and how we can develop her skills. I demonstrated to her how to read critically to get information from the text and then we practiced this for some time. I left her with a writing prompt for an essay she will develop and write for our next session.

The student is already very strong in Math, and so prep will focus on writing and verbal skills. He is taking the ACT soon (~4 weeks), but doesn't have the requisite prep book, so we went over SAT materials. He has excellent testing instincts, though could use a little work improving vocabulary. Gave him a shopping list for our next session, and assigned an SAT practice test.

Online SAT Reading Tutoring review by Molly
We spent most of our time working on critical reading; The student has a SAT prep book and we worked on some of his responses to the practice passages. He consistently narrows his responses down to the two most likely; we spent some time working on strategies for selecting the best answer (looking for context clues, analyzing what exactly the question is asking, etc.). We also looked briefly at the SAT Writing section, and went over what the graders will be looking for. Because this was the students first session, we also spent some time discussing the test itself (how it's graded, what the structure and sequence will be like, penalties for guessing, etc.). The student is very bright and receptive to instruction. He reasons well and was very quick to grasp new concepts and words.

Online SAT Reading Tutoring review by Ishita
Today was a get to know you session. We talked about goals and what she's hoping to get on the test and where she wants to go. Then we started discussing general strategy for the reading section. After that, we worked through some practice sections. She still needs to work on her vocabulary and her reading speed is slow, but her comprehension is quite good. We also started reviewing a little bit of math.

The student had not gotten a chance to do a practice section prior to the meeting, so we started off w/ a 25 minute critical reading one. She did well on it. Since she had struggled the most with vocab, we spent the rest of the session going through the 250 most common SAT words.

The SAT is a standardized exam accepted by all colleges in the United States for admissions purposes. This exam is intended to assess your college readiness and ability to succeed in higher level courses. The admissions office at the college or university you're hoping to attend will review your scores when considering whether or not you are a good candidate for their school. Admissions offices also look at letters of recommendation, admissions essays, and your high school GPA. As part of the admissions portfolio, it is important to do well on the SAT. The SAT Reading evaluation is intended to measure your ability to understand passages you are reading, determine which information is crucial to the point of the passage, and be able to use the information you have read to answer questions.

What content or skills can an SAT Reading tutor help me review to prepare for the Reading section of the SAT?

The SAT Reading section consists of several different types of questions. You will have 65 minutes to answer 52 multiple-choice questions. You will need to read passages which can come from contemporary World or US literature as well as historical documents from early American history. You may also be required to read a social science selection and passages from physics, biology, earth science, or chemistry texts. It is also possible you will be required to compare two passages in order to answer questions. This part of the SAT is 25% of your overall score. As such, it's important to prepare adequately so this section doesn't pull your score down.

There are several skills your SAT Reading tutor can help you work on to prepare for this part of the exam. The first is your command of evidence skills. You will need to be able to determine the supporting text in a passage which can back up the conclusion the author is trying to make. You also need to be able to determine whether the author uses this evidence to adequately support his or her conclusion. You may also be asked to relate these passages with different graphics.

You will also be assessed on your ability to understand words in context. You will need to be able to identify unfamiliar terms used in the context of the passage. It is also important to be able to determine how word choice can affect the meaning, tone, or style of a text.

The Reading section also assesses your analytical skills in history, social studies, and science. You will be required to accurately examine an author's hypothesis and understand the data. You will need to be able to consider the implications of the evidence and how it affects the hypothesis.

Many students also struggle with pacing during timed exams. It can be tempting to watch the clock. However, this can increase your anxiety and waste time. Your SAT Reading tutor can assist you in practicing the ability to finish as many questions as possible in a short amount of time. Your instructor can take the time to teach you different time management approaches to assist you in finishing the Reading assessment. For example, if you know you struggle with questions in which two responses seem correct, your instructor can help you to understand how to make an educated guess. Since there are no penalties for wrong answers, you don't want to leave any questions blank. Your instructor can also help you figure out how to determine the correct answer by looking more closely at the phrasing of the question to make sure you are thoroughly understanding what it is asking. You may even be able to practice taking a full practice Reading assessment while being timed so you can practice using these skills. These types of time management strategies can help you not only with the SAT Reading evaluation but also with any future timed standardized exams. Any and all of these skills can be practiced during your SAT Reading tutoring sessions.

How is SAT Reading tutoring different than other educational environments?

Private instruction with a knowledgeable SAT Reading tutor is a vastly different experience than you might find in a typical classroom setting. One of the biggest benefits of private tutoring is the ability to receive individualized lesson plans. Your instructors are not only knowledgeable in the content area but are also skilled at conveying the information in ways that you can understand. When you work closely with an expert SAT reading instructor, you gain the advantage of personalized lessons with the content and teaching style catered to suit your particular needs. Since your tutor has the opportunity to get to know your preferred learning method, he or she can make adjustments to how they teach in order to help you understand the concepts more fully. As an example, if you know you are a visual learner, your instructor can make use of educational videos or infographics to assist you in understanding the material in a way that makes the most sense to you. Alternately, if you are an auditory learner, your instructor can use supplemental podcasts and recordings in addition to a lecture format for study sessions while assisting you in reviewing for the Reading portion of the SAT.

Since you are the only student, your study sessions are focused on your precise needs. Your instructor has the possibility to focus on the exact skills and opportunities you need help understanding. You won't need to spend any time working on skills you've already mastered. Instead, you and your instructor can take as little or as much time on each specific skill as necessary for you to understand it. Lesson plans can also be modified as your skills and knowledge develop. This creates study sessions which are more useful and productive.

For example, if you are having a hard time determining how authors use supporting evidence, your instructor can help you by providing practice questions and instant feedback on what you may be doing wrong. This allows your teacher to break down the format of a question so you have a chance to understand what the question is actually asking you to figure out. When you practice questions in an environment which mimics the conditions you will face on test day, this gives you an opportunity to understand what to expect during the actual test.

Flexibility is another area for private instruction to give you an advantage. Thanks to Varsity Tutors, you have the opportunity to attend your sessions either online or in person. Online sessions can be accessed using our Live Learning Platform. This brings face-to-face personal instruction to wherever you like to study, as long as there is the Internet and a computer available. Choosing the online option also allows you to have access to a wider range of instructors since you are not limited to the area in which you live. When you meet with your instructor in person, you will be able to decide the location and time of your session. This means you can meet with the instructor in the morning at your favorite breakfast shop, in the afternoons after school at the local library, or in the comfort of your own home on the weekends. We will make every effort to pair you with an instructor who is able to work within your established schedule. Our goal is to make private instruction simple and convenient for anyone who wishes to utilize it.
