Varsity Tutors helped our son raise his SAT over 100 points, and his ACT 3 points, which resulted in being accepted at all of the schools he applied to. We were very happy with our instructor and will definitely utilize VT again for our other children.

Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Benjamin in San Marcos, TX
In our first session, I wanted to gauge the student's ability (and sense of her own ability) by running through some sample sections of each category of question. She seems quite competent in almost everything, though she's asked for help in Math. Some categories I was able to identify for us to review in the future include: sets, probability, word problems, minor geometry, sequences/series, and the upper end of quadratic equations. In the final third of our session we covered the basics of geometry for review - area, perimeter, surfaces, angles - and discussed the arc of our next few sessions.

The student and I worked on grammar and writing. He did a practice essay for me as well. His timing was a little off. However, his accuracy is good overall. We will continue to work on timing.

SAT Tutoring review by Emily in San Marcos, TX
During this session we worked on the math and critical reading portions of the test. We worked on math first, going over the practice I had left him for homework. For the most part, our math preparation consists of constant review of old concepts from different subjects, and then identifying different strategies for finding the answers based not only on our knowledge of the question, but our knowledge about the answer choices as well. For homework, I left him his first timed multiple choice practice section. Then we worked on sentence completions for critical reading. We discussed how context is extremely important when trying to identify the relationships between or the connotations of the missing words. We also worked on vocabulary, and logical strategies for approaching unfamiliar words. For homework, I left him a practice section of reading comprehension multiple choice questions.

SAT Tutoring review by Robert in San Marcos, TX
The student and I met at our normal time and immediately started working on a reading test. She did a wonderful job, finishing most of her sections as quickly (so usually 15 minutes or less for 25 minute section). We also were able to work through a couple writing sections, on which she did well. I will prep more reading sections for next time, and will try to find some additional vocabulary material.
