We began the session with the remainder and divisibility questions as promised. I purposely chose the more challenging problems. I also explained, and then the students demonstrated, how to use the prime factorization of numbers to determine the greatest common factor and/or least common multiple of a pair or group of numbers. From there, we moved on to a lesson on percents which began with direct percents- simply dealing with percents of amounts- and then went into percent increase and decrease. The students then used this review to complete a particularly difficult question from the previous session's assignment. Next, we read over the model essay, and they noted improvements for their own essay approach. Finally, we ended the session by discussing an approximate game plan for the next two months. Positive note: they really enjoyed using a vocab app to help them learn and review vocabulary!

Last week, I had asked that the student complete a reading comprehension section within a 25 minute time limit. When we met this week, I learned that she was not able to complete the entire section within the time limit. She was not having much success getting through the entire reading and leaving herself enough time to return when trying to answer the questions. I suggested that she try 'priming' herself for the reading by familiarizing herself with the questions briefly before beginning the passage. This helped save her some time, but she was still struggling a bit with questions that asked 'why' the author had said something. In these questions, the ones that rely heavily on the context of indicated text, she would tend to choose answers that, while relevant, would not be justified by the entire passage. I made some suggestions to her as to how to identify these types of questions when she reviews the questions before reading the passage, and suggested that she try to keep them in mind while reading. She is making progress towards conquering the reading comprehension portion of the SAT, but still needs to do some work to cut her time down. We will continue to focus on this area in future sessions. Next week we'll look at doing a timed math section, and another reading section.
