Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Amanda in Cranston, RI
We reviewed the student's most recent practice test. He did a fantastic job and showed significant improvement. He scored a 1240 overall, and a 620 on each section. We also reviewed the questions that he got wrong. For writing, he got nearly every question right on the second try. For math, we reviewed a few new concepts. The student has asked that we spend extra time on circles which we will do in our final session.

SAT Tutoring review by Jacob in Cranston, RI
In this session, we worked on the student's upcoming English state assessment exam. Overall, he seems well prepared for the essay and has received a lot of good tips from his teachers in school. I added by suggesting that he keep his ideas clear and distinct when setting up his paragraphs, and that he explain and analyze every piece of text that he quotes from the given passages. The readers want to see students engaging with the material. For the reading, we went over this much like we did with the SAT. I noted that using deductive reasoning could definitely help with these problems, as he gets quickly attached to certain answers when he goes in looking for the correct answer. I also suggested that he be careful when looking back to the text, and to make sure he has a good understanding of the "big picture" before he goes into answering the questions.

SAT Tutoring review by Kyle in Cranston, RI
Today we went through the entire writing and language section on the SAT practice test 3. The student seems to be very strong in this area; the only questions that he struggles on are the ones where a sentence needs to be moved to another place in the paragraph, but I think he's getting better at them.

SAT Tutoring review by Marilyn in Cranston, RI
This was my final session with the student before her SAT on Saturday. For homework she had completed a simulated SAT test. Today we scored the test together and worked through as many missed questions as possible. She scored a 1200 on this practice exam, which is her target score for Saturday's test, and a 110 point improvement from her previous score. The student and I were able to make it through correcting the Critical Reading and both Math sections.

SAT Tutoring review by Grace in Cranston, RI
We covered a number of writing and math sections. The student was able to get the majority of questions right (probably above 90 percent) even though I gave him high difficulty problems. I think that if anything he could memorize a few volume and surface area formulas in the rare event they come up on the test and some combinations and permutation formulas. He was able to use the formulas to successfully get the correct answers. He also did well on the writing section in general, and was able to get most questions right as well as analysis/main point questions. A few of the comma questions were tricky, but he was able to get most right. Overall, I believe that he will do great on the test, as he showed a lot of improvement from yesterday on the writing section, especially with regard to subject-verb agreement.

SAT Tutoring review by Stephanie in Cranston, RI
At our third session, the student worked through material from three math problem sets. One was a mix of algebra II topics, one was on linear equations, and one on quadratic equations. These are the most common content areas on the SAT math test. She did very well on the topics she knew and picked up new material very quickly. The practice problems from this session were mostly discrete calculations, but the questions on the test will be mostly word problems. At our fourth session on Thursday, she will apply the concepts from our most recent sessions to word problems like the ones she will see on the test.
