The student worked on parts of speech identification using colors to highlight them in sentences. I wrote another short story with imbedded vocabulary. Then we worked on the times tables 6,7, and 8 and some long division. She continues to read the story and is building her sight vocabulary using rhyme. She reviewed vocabulary all grouped by function.

The student made exceptional progress this week; the essay she wrote for homework was truly outstanding - definitely a "4" (I agree with her father's estimation that it was even a "5.") She demonstrated to me in this essay that when she feels passion for the subject matter she is capable of writing a sophisticated, thorough, creative and insightful piece, with no typos or grammatical errors. Now that the student knows she is capable of this caliber of writing, I plan to work with her in coming weeks on how to produce high quality work under the pressure of a timed test setting, and how to work with a prompt she isn't as fond of.

The student worked with me through a game about words. We are working on learning longer, more complicated words. She is a very bright girl and catches on quickly. I also looked at her copy of a paper she had written and I corrected some spelling errors. Then I looked through the paper again and left symbols and notes of dropped words.

The student had an important paper due at midnight on the night of this session, so we spent the entire duration of the session working on that paper. I began by reading through what the student had already written and writing comments on the paper. We then discussed the main argument and big supporting ideas to make sure they were in good order. After this, we went through the paper --idea by idea and sentence by sentence--discussing what she was doing and ways to make the paper stronger. By the time we were finished, the student's paper was in much better shape, and she reported feeling as though she could handle the revisions for the paper quite well.

Today was a great first (full) session. I drew up some notes about note-taking, the elements of an academic essay, and some guidelines to approaching writing assignments ahead of time; we went through these issues. During this time I put a lot of emphasis on the importance of planning ahead in writing. We then discussed the story I had asked him to read (Fitzgerald's "Bernice Bobs Her Hair"). As we discussed the story, we continually brought our discussion back to issues of constructing an essay, developing an argument, and planning a paper. I will be emailing the student several things: my notes from the session; a short writing assignment; a new reading to work on for next week. I will ask the student to outline an essay based on the new reading during our session next week. I'm looking forward to it.
