Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Santa Monica, CA Physiology tutoring
In this session we went over concepts in momentum and quadratic functions for his math class. The student did well with distributing binomials into polynomials, which is usually one of the harder tasks when dealing with quadratic functions. With momentum, the student did well with the conservation of momentum, but had a tough time with impulses. It is easy for him to manage the forward reaction with things like a cannon ball, but he has a hard time translating the idea to collisions. We will work on this more in the next session.

The student has a test this week on some of the material covered in the thermochemistry chapter, and there were a few things she wanted to review. We looked at how to determine the final temperature of metal, and I helped her find an algebraic method for determining the final temperature of a heated piece of metal after it is submerged in cold water. We also reviewed the rules for determining whether a reaction is spontaneous from the values of deltaH, deltaS, and deltaG. I think the student was much more prepared for the test by the end of the session.

We went through his homework for this week. I explained the concepts to him and asked him to apply them to the questions. He understood them, and he was able to answer most of the questions by himself. We solved almost 25 questions on oxidation numbers and ions. He is doing well.

We covered equilibrium and elements of thermodynamics in preparation for her test tomorrow. Most of the content was straightforward, though we ran into some complications with special rules for determining concentrations of products at equilibrium given equilibrium constants.

The student and I worked on physics exclusively during out session. We discussed vectors, velocity, displacement, force, acceleration, the relationship between all the aforementioned variables, and other concepts such as friction, unit conversion, and frame of reference/relativity. I taught her about scientific notation and we reviewed it thoroughly, as she was prone to simple errors--I taught her various tricks to prevent them. It was a lot in one day, but I was proud of our progress. I left her with some very minimal reading regarding the different types of friction.

We continued with her biochemistry section of her MCAT prep book and focused mainly on enzyme kinetics. We started by defining each of the terms and then worked on a white board drawing out different scenarios that may come up on the exam. We worked on how to approach these types of problems. I also found some good video tutorials online that explained the material in another way and sent that to her after the session. Enzyme kinetics can be a very hard to understand subject, so I think it is good for her to find as many explanations as possible to find one that really "clicks" with her. Next session we planned on continuing with and possibly finishing her biochem section.
