Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student read a story for comprehension and finding the main idea. He identified setting, problem, characters, solutions, etc. We also went over expository texts. He is reading 6th grade material. He is doing great in reading. Next, we went over his spelling words. He knew all the words and could explain what each contraction meant. We did a chapter review test from his math book. He is doing better on word problems. The student still needs to work on his multiplication facts. He knows almost all the eights. I showed him a trick to multiply nines. He seemed to like the suggestion. "
"First time meeting since the summer. Went over demonstrative pronouns (hic and ille) since the student has a quiz over them on Monday. Also translated part of the Chapter 26 story for a homework assignment."
"The student and I reviewed the material for her upcoming test: surface area of prisms and cylinders and various probability exercises. Her understanding of surface area has improved, but she still needs to be careful with her calculations. We had very few issues with probability."
"I met with Student A and Student B to talk about statistics and mathematics in general. In statistics we talked about different types of sampling such as SRS, stratified, systematic and clustered. We discussed examples, ways they can go wrong and how we could possibly fix them."
"SAT: went over overall structure of the SAT, 3 sections, different types of questions, timing, etc. Focused most of the remaining time on the reading section. Completed vocab questions and made a vocab list (half note cards), completed 2 sections of passage based reading questions."
"The student and I worked through a series of slide "speaker notes" she had prepared based on text from the French version of the slides. We made corrections, additions, substitutions of words, and practiced pronunciation. Finding this helpful and productive as a process, she will prepare similar notes for the next series of slides, and we plan to follow a similar process at our next session on Thursday."
