"The student and I worked some more on reading out loud and sounding out words. We're still learning to get the sounds from the parts of the word and not what I'm saying, but it's progress. We talked specifically about the -tion ("shun") ending today. He did a very good job!"
"Today we covered reading comprehension and answering multiple choice questions and open-ended essay questions based on a passage. The student did well with the reading, there were only a few vocabulary words he did not know. He also did well on the multiple choice questions and the short open-ended questions. The focus going forward will be on his vocabulary and his essay question answering skills."
"The student began by reading aloud Chapters 5 and 6 from Arthur and the Poetry Contest. While reading, she noted unfamiliar vocabulary words on index cards, writing definitions in her own words and drawing simple illustrations. She used context clues to think about definitions. She was also directed to think about strong, familiar words. Vocabulary words included: "perched, limit, soggy, and imagination." She considered "problems" facing the characters and predicted how they might be resolved. She then read aloud from a passage called "Sea Turtles." We discussed the use of titles and headings as "main ideas." Using a highlighter while reading, she looked for details that support the idea "sea turtles are suited for life under water." Then she wrote bullet notes about the beaks and feeding habits of sea turtles. Next time we meet she will read the rest of the turtle essay and write a paragraph."
