Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We got back the student's first test results. Math and science were good improvements. There is still room for improvement with English and reading. We went over many English problems, reiterating common rules."
"In this session, the student and I began by going over one passage in the ACT's English section. We went over more on relative clauses, idiomatic expression, making sentences more precise and when to use commas and other punctuation. The student did a good job finding the answer and explaining her thought process for some questions on grammar and on the effect of a section or of adding or deleting a sentence. However, she should remember that for many questions, it is important to read through the passage for context rather than only focusing on the grammar or structure of a sentence by itself. In the second part of the session, we worked on one science passage. She did well on reading information from charts, but could continue to improve on comparing multiple charts and graphs and in using information from the rest of the passage, as well as from charts and graphs - to answer questions. In the last part of the session, we worked on one humanities reading passage. She read the passage, and did a very good job with the questions. Because the student said that time was a problem for her, I recommended that she use a timer to limit her reading time for each passage to five minutes, and then to cut this time down little by little to 3.5 minutes, ideally. She can also continue to practice her vocabulary."
"We worked on reading for details using the short story, "The Lottery." Then we completed a practice reading test together."
