Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I started the session by reading his book about the greatest basketball players of all time. His reading was good, he figured out new words by context like we talked about last session. I wrote down the words that he had trouble with and we reviewed them after reading. He got tripped up by some words (tried vs tired, there vs three, etc...) so I had him read each word so he could distinguish them apart. Also, he sometimes confuses larger words, he kept saying 'competition' when he would read 'championship' or 'concerned'. After reading, we worked on fraction multiplication, division and simplification. We also practiced multiplication tables and working backwards with division. He did a really good job today."
"The student had a mixed review sheet for the entire year. She had to add decimals, add money, standard vs. word form of numbers in the millions, place value of decimals and numbers in the millions and multi-step word problems. She did very well on the worksheet. Two problems she didn't read the entire problem and answers and just guessed. We reviewed that you need to read everything and all the answers before guessing, show all work, and check the answer."
"We focused on comprehension and on visually seeing why combinations have fewer outcomes than permutations. He seemed to understand much better and was much more confident by the end, solving the practice problems with no difficulty."
"Today we started with choosing the correct main idea from a list of four after reading a paragraph about a non-fiction topic. Then we worked on conclusions, also reading a paragraph and then choosing the correct conclusion from a list of four. Next we worked on math. We worked on fractions and decimals adding and subtracting. The problems got more difficult as we continued our work. The student did well on all levels."
"Covered fundamentals of algebra in great detail. Student had pervasive weakness on SAT Math involving basic math skills in complex or confusing situations. Focused specifically on fractions, exponents, and radicals in algebraic equations. Worked on step by step solution process for all algebra, and identifying quadratics and GCFs. Student showed improvement in using each tool, as well as in overall approach to problems. Will reinforce lesson tomorrow and check for retention."
"We went over calculating Z- score, notion of p-value, null versus alternative hypothesis, estimating sample proportion. The student was very attentive and eager to catch up. She needed help the most with estimating population proportion. I told her that an important strategy to use is to think of 1-alpha as the unwillingness to let go of the null hypothesis."
