Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had an essay to work on in which she analyzed a critical article. The article was about a book she had already read. She had to agree or disagree with the article's thesis, as per her professors instruction. She outlined her ideas, reviewed some quotes for evidence, and wrote the 4 page essay. We discussed editing and proofreading techniques."
"The student had math and chem tests to prepare for. We went through both reviews and I helped her try to understand the material. She has a lot to memorize before her tests. I know she has a better understanding of how to work each problem."
"The concepts covered today focused on using the first and second derivatives of a function to draw an approximation of the original function or describe its behavior using critical and inflection points. We also reviewed the process for solving a quadratic equation or a minimization problem."
"The student and I began our final session by working on reading comprehension with a 25-minute timed section, which we then reviewed. His errors came primarily from rushing and guessing toward the end; otherwise, he did an excellent job of approaching and answering the questions, and on the test day he can work on pacing himself and not rushing even with limited time. Then he did a short timed writing section and a short timed math section and did well on those; we ended by working out a difficult math problem in detail, which might not make sense with timing on the test, but is well within his ability level as far as actually solving the problem. I am confident that he will do well on Saturday!"
"Today I reviewed Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory with the student and how it relates to predicting geometrical shape of molecules. We also reviewed naming binary compounds including Type I, Type II, and Type III systems for naming. We also reviewed naming of polyatomic molecules and assigning charges to the compounds."
