The student and I worked on the physiology of the heart and cardiac muscle.  We're both learning a lot! Given the level of the material, I'm functioning more like an educated study partner than a tutor, but it seems to help which is the important thing. We are planning to meet again either Thursday or Friday.

We began discussing the lungs, by carefully reviewing the structures the lead from the mouth to the alveoli sacs. We discussed the difference between the conducting and the respiratory zone and went over the main ideas regarding the function of the lungs (to oxygenate blood) and were this takes place (alveolar sacs). We discussed capillaries, alveolar septa, the difference between the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein as well as some of the immunological functions of our lung tissue.

The student is a high school sophomore who is taking the preliminary admissions test this week. He was not too familiar with the exam, so his parents wanted him to have a quick review session to try and help him understand what to expect with the exam. Since this is not the junior year test which is used for National Merit, he didn't seem too worried about this exam. We spent the session going over each section of the test. I explained how each section was divided and general tips on how to tackle each section. I then had him complete one reading and one math section with the time limit. After we reviewed each section, he and his mother revealed that he qualifies for more time on his exam, so hopefully that will take a little of the pressure off of needing to complete the sections with the allotted time. Overall, he did well.

Today, the student was eager to get started! We have been consistently reviewing sight words. She is starting to recognize them quicker. She does a wonderful job sounding out her words and this helps tremendously when she starts to read. I tested her on a book at a higher level today. We will continue to read at a level 2-3 and work on sight words so that she can soon master reading at this level.

Today we worked on roots and powers, scientific notation, and started coordinate geometry. She did well overall. She said she was working on material outside of the session, and came prepared with questions. She struggled a little bit with the scientific notation. We will review and also go over graphing more in depth next time. She registered for the Feb. 5 exam. She is doing well.

With Student A, we continued working the family vocabulary. He already has a good grasp of switching between definite and indefinite articles. The only slight challenge was remembering all the new family vocabulary quickly to use them in a sentence, but we'll keep practicing those. We also introduced one adjective on the side, so next time we'll discuss those more. With Student B, we reviewed some verbs used around the office, but next week we'll focus more on using them in sentences, not just conjugation.
