The student and I started out by going over the essay she wrote last session. We discussed some key points for improving her essay writing along with what to do if she wasn't sure of how to answer the prompt. We went through the outlining phase of another prompt together and then she wrote an essay again that I will look at outside of tutoring, so we can go over it next session. We spent the remainder of the time focusing on some of the more difficult math problems. The student is doing an excellent job of drawing out equations to make them easier to understand and seems much more confident about these problems. I left her with a set of difficult problems and explanatory answers to work on, on her own, before our last session, scheduled for this Tuesday.

Today, we made a bit of a break through in regards to the student's approach to the reading section. I made him try taking notes (basically just a one-word summary) next to every paragraph, and while this makes him take a bit longer to read the passage, he takes less time on the questions, because he retains the information. He says he doesn't even use the notes to go back and reference the material because taking notes makes him think about what he is reading as he is reading it, ensuring he commits it to memory. In addition, we also covered some math. In addition to reviewing a few concepts, we're working on strategies to stay attentive and avoid making little mistakes.

Reviewed the fifth and final ACT practice test from the official guide. I was pleased with his consistency and accuracy on the vast majority of questions. I think the student has developed a good method for optimizing his speed. He has regained his confidence and I think he's prepared for the ACT next Sunday.

The student and I worked on the writing portion of the SAT once again, this time putting what I believe are the final touches on this phase of his tutoring. We reviewed homework problems, the results of which indicated that he'd definitely been studying his grammar and that he'd reached a certain threshold of success, i.e. consistently getting 85 percent of the questions per passage correct. Punctuation remains his biggest area for improvement, though some additional work on writing skills questions in general wouldn't hurt either. We will continue to work on these. I loaded him up on strategies for both question types -- guidelines for both validating right answers and eliminating wrong ones. I also gave him a document that encapsulates key reading comprehension tactics and approaches, as this will be our next task to tackle.
