Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the session making preparations for a presentation for one of the student's classes. We first picked some research articles to use. We then began creating an outline, going over the major topic questions involved. We also discussed separate situations that presented the main question of his presentation. We spent the rest of the session discussing supporting evidence for his takes on the issue of his presentation."
"We studied for the student's upcoming marine biology exam. He seems to have a fairly good grasp of the material and is excited about the class. With the last 30 minutes, we reviewed his English paper and history study guide. We made some small edits to his English draft and reviewed the poems he cited in the paper as well."
"We studied rate, time, and distance word problems and coin problems that could be solved with systems of equations. We also started on graphs of inequalities. The student seemed to pick everything up quickly, and he has gotten a lot better at word problems."
"We talked briefly about momentum and impulse from physics class. The student had great notes and sounded like he really understood what he was talking about. We moved on to algebra, still working with 'functions.' Today, we found and graphed functions with their inverses. The only issues he had were with finding domain and range for the functions."
"We used graphing and substitution to solve two linear equations at the same time. At first, the student had trouble with graphing multiple lines on a graph. Through my lesson and practice, she was able to graph the lines even through equations where the standard line equation was not present. Substitution was challenging at first as well, but she was able to understand the concept after just a few examples. Her confidence for the material was great. She also has made improvements in her speed of comprehension."
"We went over a past problem the student had gotten wrong, and then we went through her Pythagorean theorem worksheet. We talked about the special properties of an isosceles triangle (that the altitude bisects the base). She is doing very well with this topic. We spent the rest of the time doing fraction practice problems and will probably keep doing these. She's gotten a lot better but still has further to go to get it 100%, which I think will really help her in math in the future."
