How can Science tutoring help you?

Modern science has taken us leaps and bounds ahead of our not so distant ancestors, with an unprecedented amount of research being done all over the globe. Scientists are uncovering the secrets of nanotechnology, meteorology, optics, environmental change, anatomy, and any number of other topic areas. It's a lot to keep up with, but if you're taking a science course then you're going to have to do it. If you find yourself struggling at any point, don't wait until your issues have become unmanageable before you seek out help. Session Summaries by Science Tutors

San Marcos, TX Science tutoring
The student and I started discussing one of my favorite aspects of physics; Circuit analysis! We went over Ohm's Law to begin with, but quickly moved on to resistances placed in series and in parallel. I showed him the calculation of equivalent resistance for each and worked through a homework worksheet. He seems to enjoy the topic and how logical all the rules are. He continues to do very well.

Today we covered fundamental particles, and the Standard Model. The student requested some clarification on relationships of fundamental particles to atomic structure and the various forces involved. This was a good session where she now has a clear overview of the sub-atomic particles that constitute matter (Fermions) and the particles that represent strong and weak forces present in the universe (Bosons).

Principal topics in this discussion were capacitors, separation of charge, dielectrics, and semiconductor diodes (p-n junctions). This was to get at the semiconductor and energy-generation processes of the cell. Very interesting topics all around, and pointing in some directions that get me asking questions about piezoelectricity and the relation to semiconductor physics.

For this session, we continued our review of physics. We continued our review of mechanics, covering torque, uniform circular motion, center of mass and center of gravity. We began by talking about the circular motion of objects at constant speed and discussed the acceleration of these objects, the centripetal acceleration. We also talked about the velocity vectors and discussed some ideas concerning vectors such as how vectors can be summed or subtracted. We then moved on to discussing the idea of the rotational movement and how forces have different torques based on their magnitude, the distance from the pivot of rotation at which they are applied, and the angle at which they are applied. We finally talked about rotational inertia and how objects with masses more distant from the axis of rotation have larger rotational inertias.

The student and I discussed acid-base chemistry. We discussed specifically which species were present during a titration between a strong acid and weak base. Furthermore, we calculated the pH during different time points during the titration. We also used pH to determine equilibrium constants for certain reactions.
