Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

San Marcos, TX SAT Writing and Language tutoring
We looked at some questions that the student missed on the ACT practice test she took this past week. Then we did the first three reading passages of the SAT book's practice test #4. Before the March SAT, she will try to take the entire third practice test, to simulate the real SAT experience. Also, we have scheduled one more session before the test.

Today, the student and I went through the math section. I think her main issue is that she knows most of the mathematical formulas or information, but has problems interpreting word problems to figure out what to do. Once I give her the first step, she usually can go the rest of the way on her own. As such, it is mostly a confidence issue. Tomorrow, I am going to give her word problems, and guide her through what they need her to do, in order to help her read and understand word problems. I also assigned her a grammar section.

We began with a review of a reading section the student had done for homework. We talked about how every component of the correct answer has to ring true with the passage. We then turned to a writing section, reviewing a question about relevance. We finished with a fair amount of work in the math section, reviewing a number of important topics: conversion units and reading tables, inequalities, line of best fit, the equation of a circle, and perpendicular lines -- many of which were tested as part of word problems. She has gaps of knowledge here and there, but not a great many; her greatest challenge is executing problems confidently and methodically. We discussed some strategies for keeping track of information and, equally important, overcoming moments of anxiety and doubt. We will also continue to fill the gaps as we go forward.

You took a diagnostic test that consisted of a reading, math, and writing and language section. We reviewed part of the reading and math section and also reviewed a few strategies for the reading section: (1) Read the intro paragraph first to understand the context. (2) Skim the questions to see if there are any you can answer first (i.e., questions about the first paragraph/ sentence) and to get an idea of what kinds of things you need to be looking for in the reading. (3) When the answer choices are quotes, like Line 29: "I...you," make sure you pay close attention to where the quote ends, because they may include a different answer choice with a quote nearby that contains the actual answer. Overall, today was a great start! You did a great job on math and we'll make sure to cover strategies for each section in our future sessions, so you'll get even better! I'll bring information about strategies for the math section for our next session.

We covered close-reading and note-taking strategies on the Reading section of the SAT. In particular, we focused on annotating each paragraph of the reading selections to improve problem-solving accuracy. At first, the student had a little trouble coming up with proper summaries of the passages as we read them, but she quickly picked up the technique and became adept at summarizing the passages and answering the questions.

The student did his math homework. The new SAT problems, even the simplest, were too hard for him, so we switched to the old SAT, which tends to be easier. Then we did some English, and then reading.
