Struggling with reading the questions carefully and with understanding how to USE basic concepts like Avogadro's number -- this will improve only by extensive, daily (or every other day, minimum) practice. No extra practice; no concerns.

The student and I worked through a worksheet of some questions to help him prepare for his final. This portion of the questions were multiple choice, so we discussed various strategies for getting the right answer. By thinking through the problems without solving them, we were able to eliminate many answers before we even started on the math. We also discussed how to best use the sheet of equations that will come with the test and how to recognize some types of problems . For example, calculus oriented problems. I think working through problems sets like these will greatly help him succeed on his final.

In our second session, we revisited some of the previous week's lessons. This time, we worked through dimensional analysis with heat transfers instead of stoichiometry. I saw the student incorporating what we had talked about in terms of use of units, labeling scratch-work, and most importantly including checkpoints and reasonability checks. This week was not just based on skill development, however. We did spend some time talking about endo- and exothermic reactions and processes. We talked about how the way we define the system and the surroundings is important. We talked about how to make reasonability checks with this new material: magnitude of numbers, signs, and correct units. We talked about troubleshooting the dimensional analysis, specifically how to figure out if an energy value or temperature change is positive or negative. A short series of questions, beginning with a comprehension of the given scenario, leads to these answers. E.g..: A hot piece of metal is dropped into tepid water. What happens to the water? Does water temperature go up or down? Is that a gain or loss of energy for the water? Is that endo or exothermic? Is that a positive or negative energy value? Then again for the metal. The student and I have been working on revisiting material to pace out her energy. Half of the worksheet now, and half three days from now is probably better, for example, than cranking out all the practice problems on a topic in one afternoon. She'll learn to create more frequent, smaller bursts of energetic activity which will lead to more encounters with material and better comprehension.
