Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we reviewed the digestive system to better retain concepts from last time, and excretory system comprehensively. The student familiarized himself with both pathways and recited them aloud to facilitate understanding. This concept review was followed by excretory system quizzes that tested main concepts and functions of nephron parts. We will continue comprehensive review and practice problems during the next few sessions this week, in order to prepare solidly for Friday's exam. Overall, I am happy with his improvement today in understanding of the tubule pathway and the enzymes involved in digestion."
"The session began by reviewing material we have covered during our previous sessions. We moved on to finishing covering the material on the invertebrate chapter. I provided him with two helpful charts and with links to videos that I believe will help solidify the information. We also covered material from another Biology book that has more "user friendly" verbiage. After finishing the chapter, we reviewed his notes that he has taken both in our sessions and during lecture. I have challenged him to read the entire next chapter (on vertebrates) over the weekend and to be prepared to discuss it (in detail) during our next session. It is difficult to gauge his total comprehension because the lecture exams require a different level of understanding than any of the practice tests, chapter quizzes, or notecards I can provide. We continue to review main concepts and to highlight key points in the book for him to review."
"The student and I looked at his grades and discussed a strategy to maximize his overall average. We talked about how to maximize opportunities between now and his final to bring up his average. We read his biology chapter on chordates, reptiles, fish and mammals."
"We specifically discussed DNA replication, transcription, and translation, and also discussed regulation methods of each. The student completed practice questions in all three areas, as well as touched on some genetics."
"We spent all of today's session focused on preparing for the first course quiz that the student will take tomorrow. During the first half hour, we reviewed the questions that I had assigned her from homework in chapters 2, 9, and 10 (she did very well in answering these). Next, we completed all of the questions from chapters 2, 3, 9, 10, and 12 in the course study guide. In doing so, we briefly reviewed previous topics and that of gene vs. chromosomal mutations. For homework, I assigned the chapter 13 questions from the study guide (the final questions remaining for quiz 1) and textbook review and application questions. She is making great progress, and I believe she should be well prepared for the first quiz on Friday."
"We spent most of our two hours together working on cancer biology during this session. I felt like we made some good progress (and notes for the student to review). Next time, we will have a more generalized review for the exam on Monday."
