How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination, or ISEE, is used by private schools as a way to measure a student's academic aptitude. Many schools require a certain minimum score for the student to be admitted. The exam has three levels of difficulty: Lower, Middle, and Upper, which correspond with the student's grade level. All three levels of the exam have five portions, including verbal and quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math achievement, and an essay. Juggling test prep for each of these sections can be a challenge for students, but a personal tutor could help. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help you find an ISEE tutor in San Francisco, California, for your student.

Receiving a good score on the ISEE requires students to have a well-rounded knowledge of math, reading, and writing. If your student has had issues with any of these subjects in the past, then scoring well on the exam may be a challenge. A San Francisco ISEE tutor can help your student prepare for the exam in an efficient manner that focuses on the areas they struggle with the most. If you or your student already know the areas that need the most work ahead of time, then the tutor can immediately begin working on those areas. If not, an assessment exam can be taken to reveal the sections that need the most tutoring. Then, the tutor can create a curriculum that is centered on strengthening your child's academic weaknesses.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

San Francisco-Bay Area, CA ISEE tutoring
The student and I went through some of the strategies for synonyms section and did "word arithmetic" of breaking words up into their word parts. She did a practice set of synonyms and did pretty well. Then we reviewed arithmetic and went through the basic rules of adding and subtracting fractions, mixed numbers and multiplying/dividing positive and negative numbers. It was a pretty productive session. Working out the math questions on the whiteboard did seem to help though.

At the outset of this section, the student talked to me about feeling somewhat overwhelmed, so I adjusted our plan a bit and worked on reading comprehension. We went over some basic strategies and then practiced four passages, going in order of what interested the student. He did fabulously, which seemed to help with his confidence in the week before his test!

In our last session, I showed the student how to do his vocabulary note cards and asked him to go home to complete 10 more by himself. He had problems understanding some of the definitions and constructing grammatically correct sentences so we began to go over all of the incorrectly written note cards one by one. I was able to locate some additional resources to help him, which we will go over next session.

For our first session, I gauged the student's strengths and weaknesses. She's clearly smart and creative but needs to get accustomed to the straightforwardness of the test and learn to recognize the "tricks" in the questions. Our next session will be verbal-heavy, and we will try to implement strategies in that area. Our work today showed there are several mathematics concepts we will need to address, but the majority of our work will be in analyzing the question types so she can figure out how to best solve each variety.

The student and I reviewed some of the math concepts we conceded last week with different versions of the problems I created. We also reviewed how to find the area of different shapes and number patterns. We finished up the example questions in reading and she brainstormed and made an outline for a sample essay. In the last 20 minutes she completed the synonym portion of the sample test and did relatively well! Thursday we will work to get through more of the test and perhaps make more flashcards to help her with her spelling.
