Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was another productive session with the student. We began our session with more independent reading, where he is required to read silently over a passage I have already read through prior to our session. He is then required to give me the pertinent details of the passage and assimilate those details to the rest of the story we have read during our previous sessions. He continues to progress in the area of story telling (and re-telling). We also introduced and covered similes, metaphors, and idioms during our session today. As we were going through our typical comprehension questions, the topic of similes was brought up by a question. He wasn't certain of the definition or how it differed from metaphors, so we spent the remainder of the session going over these topics. By the end of the session, he was able to identify similes, metaphors, and idioms from a spoken passage. Further, he was able to identify what they were trying to compare. This was a productive session and an area I will continue to address throughout our sessions."
"Topics: Reading, reading comprehension, sounding words out, history and geography Progress: This session was another success like the last session. The student was engaged and interested in the book I brought, a book about the Wright Brothers' first flight. This session was the last session he and I will have until January, so I was happy that it ended on a good note. Again, book choice seemed to be the most decisive factor in the session's success, so I will need to be prepared for the next sessions. A good book makes the student more cooperative and well-behaved, makes him want to read and put in effort, and makes me more engaged with the tutoring. He was able to sound out difficult words and his pace is becoming excellent. He will occasionally get stuck on easy words like "when," "the," and "around," but then at other points his performance is perfectly steady. I do not know what causes this discrepancy but his overall performance is many levels ahead of where we were at 1 year ago. I look forward to sessions "next year.""
"During today's session, the student worked on a reading comprehension homework assignment. The assignment required that he read assigned passages and answer questions about the passages. Additionally, he had to identify the paragraph where he found the answer. He did very on and needed very little help with the assignment. The last 20 minutes was spent with him working on the reading portion of a released test. He experienced a little difficulty with some of the vocabulary, but overall he did very well and answered most of the questions correctly."
"Today, we covered expository writing. As an introductory lesson, we worked on researching the country and making a travel brochure. It was a great preparation into a more thorough lesson next week. We practiced rephrasing facts and putting research into action."
"Today, we covered some of the parts of speech using worksheets I provided. They gave great examples, but more importantly, they were really funny and got their points across. We discussed characterization for the writing assignment I gave him, a creative writing exercise."
"Today, we did more opinion writing on holidays and books as well as some spelling. The student is in a very good place, and he was able to spell many words correctly and even identified a common mistake he made and corrected it."
