Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We discussed the results of her recent PSAT and identified areas that she can work on to improve her scores on the SAT. She did not have time to take a practice SAT since our last meeting, but she will do so before our next meeting in January. We worked through some of the mathematics section of her workbook, including part of the probability and statistics section, which she had particular difficulty with. We also began making a list of important concepts she should know to help her perform better on the mathematics section."
"We went over the SAT critical reading section intensively for the duration of the sessions. I started by bringing him a few short stories and scripts to get him in the mood to read analytically. After he read a text, I would quiz him on the themes and events of what he just read. I finished by giving him a diagnostic critical reading test, in which he scored in the 40th percentile. By the time the test rolls around, we should at least pump that up to the 70th if not 80th percentile. He is a determined young man."
"We spent the entire session working on an SAT math section. We solved a variety of problems (e.g., number lines, geometry, series, functions, etc.). Today, I tried to show him that the questions are based on basic math concepts (that he already knows) and that the real difficulty was the logical reasoning. I think he started to see this toward the end of the session. As I gave him hints on some of the more difficult problems, he was able to solve them (mostly) on his own. I think that we'll be able to really build on this progress. (Already today he was applying some of the strategies that we discussed, e.g., write down the given information and try to manipulate the equations, work backward from the information that you need, etc.) For next time, I've assigned him 1 reading, writing, and math section. This will give him a good introduction to each section and help me develop a baseline."
