The student and I went over the material he is currently studying in class (simplifying monomial expressions by multiplying or dividing and using exponent rules). For the most part he does well, but he sometimes gets confused and subtracts numbers in improper fractions because he is applying the rule for exponents when monomials are divided and applies them to the whole numbers as well! He also sometimes forgets to apply the exponent to the whole number for expressions like (2x)^3. He is doing well at retaining most of the procedure for factoring trinomials. He remembered how to solve and graph a one variable inequality and solve a system of equations using elimination, but he needed a refresher on how to find the equation of a line given two points on the line.

The student has an AP Statistics final on Wednesday. We went over a practice test together. We went over regressions, t-tests, binomials, and probability rules. We went over how to compute the cdf for the binomial distribution correctly using a calculator. We also reviewed probability concepts. He was a little confused about the rules for independence, but we straightened it out. Since the final is Wednesday, we will also meet tomorrow.

At the beginning of the session, the student completed three pages of math homework with my assistance. It covered converting between units of measurement, and deciding what would be the appropriate measurement for certain objects. He knew this material quite well! Afterward, we reviewed his English homework together, and I made corrections to his errors. For the rest of the session, we studied for his make up math test. He made his own study guide that I quizzed him off of. He was much more prepared after studying so much. I gave him practice problems similar to the ones on Tuesday, and he completed them with out as much help as he did on Tuesday. He really had a great attitude towards doing well on this test!

This session we focused on finding points on a line. I introduced the student to the slope-intercept form. y=mx+b I explained the m is the slope and it states how many spaces to go up and which direction to the right or left. We created tables for each equation. I helped him to plug in a number for x and solve the problem for y. The x and y became a coordinated pairs. We found 3 ordered pairs for each equation and then graphed each formula. I left addition practice with the student.

The student and I went over geometry, learning about isosceles triangles and using its property to solve questions. She is yet unsure about applying geometric rules to find the values of missing angles and sides. I have provided examples and reviewed them multiple times to help her grasp the concept. She seems to be satisfied with her current grade, but I wish to push her harder to help her get an A+ instead of A for the first quarter.

The student and I reviewed solving systems of equations using substitution with a focus on non linear equations. Additionally, we reviewed solving real problems to include the terms cost, revenue, and breakeven values for finance. Finally, we reviewed sketching / graphing polynomial functions using end behavior, zeros, and local extrema with and without a graphing utility. She also practiced finding real zeros of polynomial functions. She demonstrated exceptional knowledge of all subject matter.
