Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We shifted our focus from math to reading based on the student's latest progress report. We have been spending a lot of time on figurative language. She is having trouble distinguishing between the different types (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, alliteration, etc.). When coached, she's able to identify them in sentences,. We also spent some time this week on the basic parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb), which we'll also need to continue working on going forward, especially adjectives vs. adverbs."
"I gave the student a diagnostic assessment for reading to assess where the student is in terms of reading comprehension and word recognition."
"This was my first session tutoring the student. We covered language arts, which included spelling, writing, and vocabulary. By the end of the session, he had mastered all of the spelling words. I noticed when reviewing some of his vocabulary that he had done before I had gotten there that he had missed some, so I made a point to revisit those questions and discuss them. He came to the correct conclusion himself."
"Tonight, the student worked on writing individual words, both with guided tracing as well as from printed word form. He then read and practiced writing full sentences. He completed each task well."
"We began two new books - one with long vowels and one with short, as well as some review and working with money (a little). She does her best to prepare beforehand and it is obvious. Shorter words can still throw her, so I keep encouraging her to look at the letters of these words and use the sound-to-symbol correspondence we have practiced."
"We began with going over the student's spelling words briefly. He can pick up spelling quicker than his reading comprehension. Then, he read The Giving Tree and was able to summarize what he read to me. There were a few moments when he had a tough time focusing, but he pulled through. He's motivated when he sees tangible improvement, such as decrease in time spent reading the same book."
